What is Google Chat?

One of the most common uses of Google Chat is to communicate with fellow Google users. When you search for something on the web, Chat pops up as an option to send a message to the person who found the item you are researching.
Another use for Google Chat is to keep in touch with family and friends who live outside of your geographic area. You can use Chat to send messages about what you are doing, what the weather is like, or just to say hello. When you are offline, you can also use Chat to share files or photos with your friends.
If you have a Gmail account and are signed in, you can open a chat window by clicking on the “Chat” button at the top right of any web page. Alternatively, you can open a chat window by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T (or Command+Option+T on a Mac) and typing chat.google.com into the address field.

What’s the difference between Hangouts and Google Chat?

How to sign up for Google Chat

To sign up for Google Chat:
1. Open Google Chrome or Google Plus and sign in.
2. In the upper-right corner of the browser, click the three vertical lines ( menu ).
3. Click Settings .
4. In the left column, click Accounts .
5. Under “Google Accounts,” click Add account .
