Connecting in Gmail

1. Open your Gmail account and sign in.
2. Click the gear icon in the top right of the screen and select “Settings.”
3. Under “General,” click “Chat.”
4. Enter the contact’s name and email address into the “From” and “To” fields, respectively, and hit “send.”
Sending Text Messages in Gmail
You can easily send text messages from Gmail by connecting to Google Chat. After you connect, you can send text messages just like you would with a phone call. Here’s how:
1. In Gmail, open the conversation you want to text message.
2. Near the top of the conversation, under “Settings,” click the “Chat” tab.
3. Under “Settings,” make sure that Google Chat is turned on and connected to your Google account.
4. Under “Message settings,” enter your chat name and password (if applicable).
5. Click Send messages.
Receiving Text Messages in Gmail
If you want to receive text messages in your Gmail account, there are a few steps you need to take. First, open Gmail and sign in. Then, go to your Inbox and click on the three dots in the top right corner of the email box. Next, select “Chat” from the menu that appears.
To start a chat with someone, type their name into the field at the top of the screen and click on their name. You can then start typing a message. If the person you’re chatting with is online, their name will appear in white text next to their avatar. If they’re not online, their name will be greyed out and you’ll have the option to send them a message if they’re not busy.
To respond to a message, just double-click on it or select it and enter your reply. If you’ve been invited to join a chat group, you’ll see a list of all the chats in that group when you open Chat Settings. To leave a chat without saying goodbye, just type “bye” into the field at the bottom of the screen and hit enter.

Nina suggests that if you want people to know you’ve read their message, you should reply with a Google Chat Read Receipt. This way, the sender will know that you received their message and it won’t get lost in your inbox. To create a Read receipt for a Gmail message, follow these steps:
1) Click on the envelope icon next to the message in your inbox.
2) On the drop-down menu that appears, select “Settings.”
3) Under “Message settings,” click on “Read receipts.”
4) In the “Read receipts” window that opens, select the check box next to “Create a read receipt for this conversation.”
5) Click on “Send” to send the read receipt.
6) If someone sends you a read receipt while you’re offline, they’ll see a notification in their chat window asking them to send you a message so that you can view it.
